Happy National Coffee Day! I feel like there is a "National Day" for a lot of things, but this one IS important. Coffee is literally the first thing I think of when I wake up. Motherhood has intensified this. Waking up at 4:30am for work has intensified this. We use a Cuisinart "Grind and Brew" model which brews from whole beans. I will never own another. I love this machine.
I've been drinking my coffee Bulletproof for a year now. Last September, I won a giveaway from one of my favorite podcasts. (Side note, I have incredibly random luck winning random things. I can't explain it.) Included in the giveaway was MCT Oil and Bulletproof Coffee. I didn't even know what it was so naturally, I googled it. I learned more, absolutely loved it, and have been drinking it since. I am going to link an article from Bulletproof Coffee if you want to read more in depth about the benefits of Bulletproof here, as I am just going to give you the short and sweet.
Bulletproof= Hot coffee + unsalted butter + coconut oil.
(Note: Official Bulletproof uses MCT oil which is a subset of coconut oil. It stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides which are the high quality "Healthy Fats" in coconut oil. I used to use MCT Oil but given our new budget, I am using it's lesser expensive cousin, Coconut Oil. I'll share more on our budget soon. Also, for butter; we like Kerry's Irishgold or Kate's Creamery, both are grassfed which means the cows are eating what they're supposed to; grass, not sketchy GMO feeds.)
Yes, butter in your coffee. I know it sounds obscene and gross but when you think about it, butter is just churned cream right? My friend said many Irishmen will drink their coffee this way in Ireland. Just a dollop of butter in their cup and stir. It makes for a smooth, creamy, frothy, latte-like Coffee. It is truly delicious. Trust me.
The benefits? Longer satiety with the healthy fats. When you wake up in the morning, you're essentially in a fasted state since you haven't eaten all night. Consuming caffeine with a healthy fat gives your brain energy and also the creation of ketones from the fat. This means your body is running on clean energy from stored fat versus sugar and therefore increasing your metabolic rate. I can drink my coffee and be satiated until I'm able to eat breakfast. As a mom and nurse with a long commute, sometimes that is hours later depending on our schedule. I've also found it gives me less jitters, no crash and burn, and provides a smoother longer boost of energy.
If you're on Instagram, check out my story @cleanerstephanie where I detailed this step by step this morning. Also, don't ask, but I am also extremely superstitious about mugs and literally only drink from 2 in the cabinet.
